CVT TRANSMISSION SERVICE

WHAT IS A CVT TRANSMISSION?

You’re likely aware of both manual, and automatic transmissions - the CVT transmission (Continuously Variable Transmission) is the new kid on the block for vehicles. A CVT Transmission is like an automatic transmission but more efficient and seamless. Unlike traditional gear-driven transmissions, a CVT transmission utilizes two adjustable or "variable pulleys" to vary the power output ratio. When adjusted, a steel belt connects the pulleys and smoothly transitions from one gear to another without shifting.

Pulley-based CVTs are typically used in smaller vehicles such as subcompacts or hybrids, but they can also be found in some full-size sedans and SUVs. This transmission type is becoming increasingly popular with automakers Chrysler, Honda, Nissan, Subaru, and Toyota due to its superior efficiency, smoothness, and cost savings. Additionally, pulleys provide a lighter-weight construction than traditional gear-driven transmissions.

TYPES OF CVT TRANSMISSIONS

  • Belt-driven CVTs consists of two pulleys connected by a steel belt. These pulleys can be adjusted to change the gear ratio, allowing for a smooth transition between gears. This transmission type is usually used in smaller vehicles such as subcompacts or hybrids.

  • Hydrostatic CVTs use a hydraulic fluid forced through valves to vary the gear ratio. This allows for an even smoother transition between gears, and it is generally found in heavier vehicles such as SUVs or full-size sedans.

  • Toroidal CVTs use discs and power rollers to vary the power output ratio. When adjusted, a steel belt connects the toroids, and they smoothly transition from one gear to another without shifting.

CVT transmissions provide superior fuel economy and a smoother ride, but hydrostatic CVTs are typically more efficient. Additionally, belt-driven CVTs can be less expensive to repair than their hydraulic counterparts. With the ever-growing popularity of CVTs, this type of technology will likely be the transmission of choice for many vehicles in the future.

CONTINUOUS VARIABLE TRANSMISSIONS THAT MAY BE UNRELIABLE  -
NISSAN CVT TRANSMISSION

Nissan CVT transmissions are notorious for being unreliable. In fact they have had problems with the continuous variable transmission for almost 20 years. There have been lawsuits and websites devoted to this issue. The good thing is that at Continental Transmission we are experts in repairing, rebuilding and replacing the Nissan CVT transmission - frankly because we are skilled master technicians, constantly training and we have worked on so many Nissan vehicles due to their CVT transmission issues.
